Problem:
1) Scale
Produced from hard waters when excessive make-up is required and results in efficiency loss due to drop in heat transfer.
Solution:
A) Use evaporated sea water. If significant amounts of shore water is used for make-up, eliminate root cause of requiring excessive make-up and consider dosing scale inhibitor.

Problem:
2) Corrosion
Usually in the form of general wastage, but pitting, crevice corrosion, galvanic corrosion, stress corrosion and erosion can also occur. The products of corrosion can form an insulating scale interfering with heat transfer. Pitting, crevice corrosion etc. may lead to complete failure of that component.
Solution:
B) Dosage of Nitrite (protects cast iron, steel, and aluminium alloys) inhibits/arrests corrosion of metal.
