This post assumes the fire alarm has been raised and all crew has mustered and accounted for.
– Start the Emergency Generator, if not yet started.
– Stop Main Engine and all Diesel Generators. As needed, activate Quick Closing Valves for Oil Tanks and the engines, activate Emergency Stop for pumps.
– Stop Engine Room Ventilation Blower motors, then shut blower and funnel flaps.
– Firemen carry out radio check, report BA pressure and entry time. Use fire hose of appropriate length. First fireman should be engine team member due to familiarity with layout. *Do not use lifeline which is easily tangled in Engine Room*
– Firemen proceed to location of fire with fog applicator for extra protection. Report to team leader about area of fire, size, type, cause of fire and any casualties.
– Use foam/dry chemical if oil fire. If applicable, activate water mist/hypermist fire fighting system. As needed, limit the fire with boundary cooling.
– If still unable to extinguish, obtain permission to release CO2 system for Engine Room.
Takes at least few hours for engine room to cool down after fire extinguished by CO2. Could be 12 hours or more.
Monitor engine room temperature by checking nearest bulkhead (near to engine room entrance).
Wear SCBA and enter at the lowest possible point, consider oxygen consumption and plan inspection accordingly
If all good no fire or risk of reignition, carry out insulation test BEFORE starting up any ventilation.
