Main Engine Mitsubishi Turbocharger overhaul
TURBOCHARGERS
Turbochargers must always be in good condition to obtain the expected engine performance and meet current emission standards. Turbochargers can be pulse type, constant flow type, jet assist type. Refer to the maker’s manual for proper operation and maintenance. Ensure that turbocharger air intake filters are maintained clean at all times. While monitoring the turbocharger, following points must be checked:
• RPM of the turbocharger
• Exhaust gas inlet and outlet temperatures
• Cooling water inlet and outlet temperatures, where applicable.
• Turbocharger lube oil pressure and temperature, where applicable.
• Differential air pressure in manometer at the compressor side.
• Exhaust gas leakage.
• Abnormal vibration.Lubrication:
CE must ensure that bearing are well lubricated. Independent Lubrication: Daily checks to be carried out on the sump oil level. Any drop in the oil level is to be investigated and any abnormality found to be notified to office and rectified.
System Lubrication: Proper monitoring of the oil flow in return line is must. Ensure the LO low flow and high temp alarms are tested as per PMS.Cleaning:
Fouling of the turbine side of the turbocharger is a common cause for high exhaust gas temperatures. The sequence of events is often as follows:
1. Fouling of turbine (coke deposit)
2. Bad turbocharger performance
3. Lower airflow and charge air pressure
4. Higher exhaust gas temperatures.
Cleaning of the turbocharger (dry or wet) while the main engine is running must be done in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. For T/C with water washing, ensure that drain line is clear and valve is clear. For dry washing, ensure that air sealing connection for ME T/C is kept closed during washing. It should be opened after completion of cleaning.Blanking/ Locking rotor:
In event of T/C breakdown at sea, follow the maker’s procedure to lock rotor in place or remove rotor & nozzle rings and put blanks for running ME. Refer to maker’s manual for operating engine under these conditions.- This topic was modified 4 years, 3 months ago by icedcappucino.
