Anchoring, mooring equipment and fittings are to be well maintained to enable safe towing and mooring operations.
The upkeep of the deck machinery is a joint responsibility of the deck and engine departments. As demarcation of the work involved, it may be taken that the engine department is responsible for the winches with regard to the hydraulics, maintenance on the gears and clutches and piping, and the deck
department is responsible for care of deck fittings including painting, protection from effect of weather, corrosion, greasing, maintenance of brake lining brake drum etc. Protection guards and cover must be kept in good condition and properly positioned so that there is no danger to operating personnel. Particular attention must be paid to the brakes, drums and braking mechanism that must be maintained and kept corrosion free. Winches must be inspected, tested and maintained in accordance with the PMS, all work carried out to windlass and winches must be recorded and detailed spare parts lists must be maintained.
Return line filters in the hydraulic must be kept clean. During cold weather hydraulics must be started at least one hour prior of the mooring operation in order to warm up the oil. In hot weather ensure that oil coolers is in use. After heavy weather carry out inspection of the hydraulic lines for winches and windlass.
