As a Second Engineer, I supervise the Third, Fourth, Trainee engineers and a greaser/wiper.
Everytime I meet new crew, I tell them my focus is on safety and accuracy.
Sometimes the junior engineers tell me they were told by other senior engineers to work faster. E.g. If they can’t finish a pump overhaul job in 8 hours, they’re lousy engineers.
I replied them, I run things differently here. Take time to prepare, read through, feel free to discuss with me any questions (e.g. what tools to bring?), and I don’t judge how long they take to finish the job. It’s okay to make mistakes even after all this preparation, at least they tried.
But I get extremely angry when I see engineers not even reading the manual first, and rushing through the job. Most of time they make mistakes and creates extra problems for everyone.
For most people on Foreign-Going cargo vessels, we spend an average of 3 or 4 complete contracts as a Fourth Engineer.
Over these 3 or 4 contracts, majority of jobs are routine and usually give our fair share of overhaul jobs.
Speed and accuracy will eventually come with time and patience. Hang in there!
