Firstly before on the important of keeping scavenge space clean, safety and risk acessment as the main priority.
- Prior to entering enclose space, risk assessment to be carry out by competent officer
- Potential hazards to be identified. Such as toxic gas.
- The space have to check for oxygen content using gas detector. Oxygen should read 20%.
- Space must be well ventilated and properly lit.
- A permit to work to be filled and checklist to be done.
- Never enter alone not informing anyone, an assistant must be stationed outside.
- Rags brought in must be brought out.
- Proper signs to be put up at provided places.
- One person to be kept standby to communicate with person inside.
- Permit to be closed after work
- AFTER SAFETY talk on purpose of Scavenge cleaning:
FOR INSPECTION

- ensuring that the doors are secured in the open position
- Ensure pockets are empty and take in a flashlight, mirror, turning gear operating control and a digital camera.
- Condition of the scavenge manifold and the spaces around the cylinder liners.
- Ensure that there is no buildup of sludge the drains are clear.
- Check the scavenge relief valves and temperature probes.
- Inspect the piston skirt for signs of scuffing or abrasion.
- Inspect the rings for damage and the ring grooves for evidence of carbon build up
- Turn the piston down, so that the crown can be inspected. Look for excessive deposits, burning, signs of poor injection, or cracking.
- Then look up the liner using the mirror. Look for evidence of corrosion, scuffing or abrasion.
When the inspection is complete, ensure all rags, along with other items are removed from the scavenge space. Box up and record inspection findings in ships PM system
