Troubleshooting 3 phase motor
Test can be done through mega tester or a multi meter. There are 2 common test that are carried out on the motor during routine maintenance or suspected motor fault.
1) Low insulation test
This is to make sure that neither of the 3 phases wiring are touching the body of the motor which will result in 440V low insulation. Multimeter setting is switched to resistance. 1 of the multimeter probe is put on the ground of the motor, and the other one 1 of the phase. A insulation low reading indicate the wire is touching the body that can cause electrocution, which will gives a alarm on 440v low insulation switchboard.
2) Continuity test on the 3 phases
This is to test if either of the 3 phases windings are burned or broken. Multimeter setting is switched to Continuity. The 3 wires, U,V,W or red, black, white. The probes are placed on UV,UW,VW to check the continuity. The resistance reading that should be read is 0 ohms, or a Beep sound on the multimeter as currents must flows through.
