I said 2 Parts, who is it for.

I said action plan, reporting requirements, list of contacts. He keep probing and I said there is a reporting format the Res A.851(20) he say ok next.
2. Risk assessment table, draw and explain.
I drew and explained.
3. What Navigational warnings you receive on ship?
Normal answer like Nav coastal local etc.
4. Aneroid Barometer, what are the errors and use?

I said used for fog and drew the graph. He say sea temp get from where, I said ER. He say what else you use for the dewpoint, actually it’s for cargo sweat and the ship sweat.
6.Sextant.
He wants to use both horizon and sun for side and index.
7. SCBA checks?
First time I recited the checks. then told him why I do the checks and what I am looking out for.
8. Working aloft req?
9. Hot work in Cargo hold?
I said I will prepare two permits, one for enclosed space and one for hot work.
10. How you prepare FFA onboard for survey?
I talked abt fire hose and paint sprinkler system and DCP extinguishers.
11. Fixed CO2 system maintenance inspections? Quarterly inspection what you do.
I say check the cable for pilot cylinder. There’s no quarterly in MSC 1318
But there is one line in MSC 1432 for fixed FF.
12. Open sea collision, what are your actions as OOW?
I said a few points, why am I doing it and what am I trying to achieve by doing it.

I started talking abt the various books and supplement, EMS and MFAG.

So he started the session looking through your previous attempts and the comments from the previous examiners. Then he used the “checklist” and started on the mooring.

1. For mooring arrangements I give you a situation. Ship coming alongside and you are on the aft station, let’s take it that the captain is not giving instructions. How will you pass the mooring ropes, what’s the order ?
2. What do you use to send the mooring ropes ashore? What if you don’t have a “monkey fist” knot ?
3. What are the purpose for each mooring rope? (Spring, breast and head/stern line)
4. Fire at galley. Tell me your actions from the start to the end. From bridge -> muster station ->fight fire/support team)
5. How to fight a fire if it’s a “deep fryer” fire?
6. Gave me 15mins to draw the following:
A. Intact stability criteria and vessel with angle of loll
B. Mooring rope arrangement
C. Loadline. Plimsoll mark
7. What is new danger mark ? Explain in details everything. (Purpose, shape, colour, light, top mark)
8. What is night signal for north cardinal mark and west cardinal mark ?
9. Head on situation. Rule number and explain and action ?
10. Now head on situation plus crossing situation, other vessel on the stbd side. Action ?
11. Now head on situation plus crossing situation plus overtaking on stbd side. Action ?

For the COLREG situation for head on plus crossing and overtaking
My action was:
‣ Slow down and if possible take all away off by means of stopping engine or reverse propulsion.
‣ If need to take action i will take large alteration to stbd and clear both vessel.
‣ Then he add in overtaking on the stbd side. All 3 together. How ?
‣ Capt Nikhil then told me “you take stbd alteration wont clear the other vessels. You take port alteration you will clear. What’s your action ?
‣ I reply if you say clear then i will take action to port to avoid risk of collision.
‣ Capt nikhil follow up by saying which rules got say can take action to port?
‣ I reply by saying there is no rules stating whether you can or cannot take action to port when you are a give way vessel. Only in rule 17C it is stated that vessels in a crossing situation the stand on vessel shall avoid alteration to port for a vessel on the port side.
‣ On top of that i also mention rule 2b saying that due to the special circumstances i may take a departure from these rules and that will avoid danger.
‣ After that test i asked him was the action correct ? He said no.
‣ But he cannot fail me because my reasoning is correct and my action to port and take large alteration is good. If i said small alteration i would have failed.
‣ And also nothing in the rules say cannot alter to port. For give way vessel

4. Now he put an isolated danger mark 1nm on my starboard. I said rule 15 not compulsory to go starboard, i can go port after considering nav hzds, sea room, and traffic density.
5. Now he put a west cardinal buoy 500m on my port side.
6. I said go west of the west cardinal buoy.
7. He kinda promoted me the isolated danger mark means what? Means danger is below the buoy, so can actually pass the buoy. Meaning still can go starboard.

2. Overtaking situation, after overtake on starboard side, i want to cross to port side, is it crossing situation now? (No. Rule 13(d).)

I said usually see stern light. He asked what do you mean by usually? I said, if NUC, CBD, RAM etc.. masthead light can be seen.

11. After overtaking,1nm later, you realize, you need to pick up pilot on port side, from 000° alter to 270°. Now who is stand on, who is give way?
