1. Ship sailing you on watch pump room fire.
Told him all the usual points and steps. Nature of fire if cargo or electrical. Emergency team do what support team do what roving team do what. Even mentioned that the fixed gas detectors in pump room will start ringing if O2 drops and that’s 1 way you can confirm if it’s a fire also. Precautions the fire fighters should take. Boundary cooling and all. Then he said ok that’s the general view but you as chief officer being Incharge of command team what will be in your mind.
Then I told him the safety of the crew and cargo he said ok what about it. Then I told him the atmosphere in pump room might be unsafe so brief the BA wearers and also remind them to go down safely as the stairs will be steep and tight with the suit on. Maintain communication throughout with them. Standby the back up BA wearers. Then if cargo leak try to determine if still leaking and a lot. Then consider pollution. He then asked if leak what you going to do. I said try to contain the oil and consider to stop the leak to cut off the source but fight the fire at same time also. Then he ask how you going to get rid of the oil. I say prepare a line up can be pumped back to slop tank. Then he say ok there’s still some things I not hearing as a chief mate let’s move on. This question itself almost half an hour.
2. You receive MOB 50Nm master tell you prepare search plan and show him. Your GMDSS got issue cannot establish communication.
Then I told him proceed to location set up a search plan of expanding square by establishing a datum then how to establish datum. He asked why expanding square. Explained then he said ok draw for me and show expanding square. Showed him then he ask how will you determine the S 2S 3S to be how many miles. I said 1.5 miles. He say why not 500mtrs. Then I explained ship length and view of visibility if 500mtrs will defeat the purpose of the search as you can see more than that but also take weather and sea state into account. Then he ask the search pattern why alter to port or stbd. I got jammed at that. Then he ask how much the alteration is it 90degree. I said ya then he ask why also got jammed at that I said coz it’s a square kind of search then he just laugh. Then say ok move on.
3. He say loading grain in river port Brazil discharge in Indonesia. Tell me 3 parts consisting of planning, precaution and during voyage what you will do.
Started by telling him about DOA and all and how to determine how much I can load. He dig further asking how to know how much specifically I mention density of water tropical and all and as per your load line and if draft restrictions. He say no restriction. So as per your load line. Then he ask how to know the zone and what exactly to consider for river loading. Can’t remember what I said then he say ok continue. Then mentioned stability part. Then he say you still not answering what to consider. Tell me as a chief officer what will be on your mind. Then I started again by saying density of water where you loading and then load up to the relevant load line mark and then continued. He just say ok only but can tell not satisfied.
4. Preparing for dry dock. 1 month to dry dock what you prepare as chief officer can relate to your tanker.
I told him prepare a repair list of things need to do and the spares needed. Then ensure all my tanks and void spaces to be gas free ready for man entry. Prepare a table of shipboard working arrangement also and delegate duties to the other officers so rest hours are complied with. Then prepare for your surveys that need to be done in DD. Then prepare for your pipelines pressure testing your pumps overhaul then I mentioned like my last ship it was going to install a BWTS. So preparation for that. Then I moved on to stability part. He stopped me there he said that 1 you do right before entering few days before I want to know more about 1 month before. Added more stuff like gas detectors calibration and all. Couldn’t think of anything else. Then he said I’m sure you know you confirm got study but you need to know how to answer.
Then he said we stop for now but I want you to improve on how you answer and your emergencies. Put yourself in that situation as a chief officer and answer. I asked him where I need to focus on. He said focus on Emergencies Cargo and ROR. Then he said from your 1st attempt you did answer well for some and for IALA also but ROR could have been better.
Then he told me that during emergency I wanted to hear the safety aspect and cargo aspect. How you will tell the man to enter pump room. Risk of explosion. Ventilate or not. Accommodation air intake safe for people inside not and all that. Then dry dock he said I wanted to hear when you tell me prepare like what to prepare. You mentioned surveys what survey. Then he said like safety equipment I know got many points but what’s the most impt like lifeboat 1.1x test and all. Safety Construction what is impt your water tight and weather tight doors if ok or not. Then he say you mentioned repair list but you need to tell me what you going to put in repair list. He say you going to fit BWTS ok will that be in the repair list or if you going to change anodes in the tank will that be in the repair list. Then he ended of by saying focus on what I told you I know you know your stuff but he need to know how to answer and tell me what I want to know exactly don’t need to explain about other irrelevant stuff. Total whole thing took about 3 hrs.—–
12 Aug Capt Loo 1130-1200
Dry Docking/Loadline done together
Preparation as a CO and what is done
Talk about anchor – How to check, do you check every link or only % of each cable
Talk about tank – pivot to BWMC B4, D1, D2 very detailed but not until numbers, just viable organism 2 diff sizes and indicator microbes 3 main one that is harmful to humans, cholera E coli and intestine something diff cfu for each based on severity
Then back to tank he ask me continue so I assume cargo tank – pivot to COW and IG he say that time prathap not happy so explain again
Talk about reserve bouyancy – Weather tight holds and door, how is tested? Means to remove water on deck, scuppers
Talk about protection of crew on deck – Railings for rust and hold, supports
Talk about Rudder and Propeller – checksIMDG – How to load, he keep nodding then done, Vol1 what’s important, chp 7/Vol2, DGL /Supplement, Ems And Mfag flow chart
SEQ survey – Started with boarding arrgmt/LSA/FFA/ almost forgot abt nav then when mention GPS he say that time khoo not happy with my GPS so why need to do correction so I just mentioned that because earth is irregular speriod GPS sets a mean sea level 0 elevation, so we need to set antenna height as GPS works on measuring the time difference between signal sent and rcvd plus triangulation of multiple satellite, oh multiple satellite so what’s HDOP, so end up question became on how GPS works LOL
I guess I was pretty smooth like just back to back no stop that’s why pass even tho 50% not relevant to actual question

Second Attempt
Surveyor Khoo
Failed1. What was the chemical that burned in Beirut . Did you see the news.?
Ans: Yes , Ammonium Nitrate .2. Which class does it belong in IMDG . Why does it burn like that , what is the process?
3. Grain Loading . ? What is difference between reserve buoyancy and residual buoyancy ?
Too many cross questions..4. Preparation for subzero temperatures. What is category A, B and C in polar code? What are the contents of Polar Code. ? What is Fast Ice and Ice Shelf ? Old ice thickness ? First year ice?
5. How does a ship turn?
Explain the process of thrust on the Rudder .
Response: He says “expect more from a management level officer”6. Explain the stern frame, transom space ? with drawing ? How does the Rudder hang? Carrier bearing , Pintle etc etc .
Response: I gave all answers. he dint feel satisfied.7.Safety construction Survey..
Went too deep. Side Shell opening etc..Full argument.. I had to prove what I studied using IMO Res A.29 ( 1104). It’s a 200 page document .
He got pissed off.8. Hunting lever and floating lever..
Response: He said they same thing. I said they r connected but different parts ..I drew the engineering diagram.
He did not get convinced.9. What does MLC say about Alcohol limit. ?
Answered the BAC limit .. still not satisfied …By this time I got pissed too.
Last response” you need to read some areas again. Sorry at this stage I cannot pass you.”

11. I think these questions he was satisfied with, he marked the full page as ‘S’ satisfactory I think.
12. Then he asked hazards with bulk cargo, I was not happy with my answer. I gave 2-3 points. tML and combustible and hazardous, he asked some more. I said I have not sailed I won’t be able to say. I knew the answer is there in sanga Bible. Didn’t want to use Bible answer, better tell the truth.
13. Imsbc structure, didn’t even hear for 5 seconds.moved on.
14. IAMSAR
15. Steering gear requirements and test requirements. All that 28seconds thing.
16. He told enclosed space from pump room, I told everything, then he told. Okay bosun is not breathing, I told that ABC shit. Then he said on ship what you’ll do, I told refer book or call radio medical advice. He asked where is it located.i told Italy he asked from which alrs? I didn’t know the alrs volume no., he told okay alrs is fair enough.
17. Then he told fire in the same pump room. I told is there a fixed fire fighting in pump room? Coz I am not aware. He said no fixed. Then I told that normal shit. Muster blah blah boundary cooling blah blah.
18. Buoys he asked new danger, isolated danger, north cardinal
19. Course 000 north cardinal right ahead action
20. Course 090 north cardinal right ahead your action.I think that’s about it, no ror. Probably because of e test marks. he has our marks, and all those e test results. I saw it In his file. Just be natural with him, very soft spoken and helping. 12 and 17 I thought I didn’t give the answer very nicely but maybe those he didn’t care much.

Sent back for assignmentHe started off asking which company, what kind of vsl. He said vsl is a Capesize Bulkcarrier, at Japan going to San Francisco. Currently loading.
Tell me how would u take over as chief(you are in the ship office)
Asked about what equipment would u need to specifically familiarize on bridge. I said ECDIS n he wants to hear abt the contours.
Asked about ballast water management plan. What to do if ballast water system is down. What is your next course of action.(he looking for practical ans)
What do u check for loadicator and how to know if the test are correct. What will u do if the results are unsatisfactory. Would you continue to load.
He asked about load density, SF, volume n weight of cargo. What’s high density cargo.
Renewal n annual survey( he wants to know when extension is given n how long )
Docking survey, Safety Construction survey
Function of class
Draw any two search pattern
Do you know stability criteria, righting arm(GZ). Asked to draw out diagram. Ask why the tangent line(used for Initial GM) is drawn. What’s that point called when the tangent leaves the curved graph?
Grabage management plan. If chief cook called u n told u that he is going to throw garbage, what to do? Then bosun said he finished tank cleaning, alot if water in tank, can discharge?(superintendent ask why did u discharge at sea, where does it say that u can discharge it.) Now after discharging cargo, quite alot of cargo residue left in tank, charterers dont want the cargo cos it’s not good. What to do.
He wants practical answers n immediate actions. Not looking for answers from the book. And he wants to know ur supporting documents. And try not to bullshit if u dont know the answer. If dont know then tell him dont know n can find from where.
