When 1 unit exhaust temperature high it could be problems from p compression or p max
For faults affecting the p compression
- Exhaust valve leaky
- Scavenge port choked
- Piston ring sticky or broken
- Liner wear
For faults affecting P max
- Leaky fuel injector,
- Fuel pump worn out
- Late injection timing causing after burning
Other faults
- Fuel rack stuck in max position
- Insufficient cylinder lubrication
- Scavenge fire in unit
Actions taken:
- To check exhaust temperature locally and compare
- Check fuel rack for free movement, not stuck
- Check the log book for the time started to rise
- Check other unit for abnormalities
- Check other parameters, jacket temperature and pressure, scavenge temperature and pressure.
- Note the fuel index, engine rpm, t/c rpm, load indicator position
- Note expansion tank level
- Inform bridge of situation , request to maintain steady course
- Take a set of draw cards,
- Analyze card with sea trail results
- If temperature keep rising, engine speed to be reduced
- Take proper precaution before slowing down engine, inform bridge
- Carry out proper investigation
Power card
If power card indicate lower P com, lower P max, problems would be the mechanical problems,
- Exhaust valve leaky
- Scavenge port choked
- Piston ring sticky or broken
- Liner wear, liner crack
Try to eliminate the problem,
- Exhaust valve leaky ; Analyze light spring diagram
- Scavenge port choked; Scavenge manifold pressure increase
- Piston ring sticky or broken; Under piston temperature increase, scavenge temperature increase
- liner crack; Expansion tank level drop, cooling water pressure drop
If the power card shows normal P com, low Max, problem are in the Fuel injection system
- Leaky fuel injector ;Checking of draw card
- Fuel pump worn out; Check the fuel pressure diagram
- Late injection timing causing after burning; Check the fuel pressure diagram
After identifying the fault, inform master, ask for time to rectify problem
For Abnormal sea condition,
1) Run on reduced rpm until safe area, maintain a normal watch on unit,
2) Complete incident investigation report sent to office.
